“Previous answers say one cannot use TV with iPad mirroring through Apple airplay. Shouldn't one be able to mirror from iPad or iPhone if one connects Apple TV to the Sony thru HDMI?”

Yes. I do it with an Apple TV attached HDMI.

Apple® iPad™ mobile digital devices, Apple iPhone® mobile digital devices and Apple iPod® portable players are not supported for use with the screen mirroring feature. These devices use a proprietary technology called AirPlay® Mirroring, which will only work with certain Apple TV® devices.
