the I.R. blaster is the (Infer Red remote) signal receiver for the remote.

An infrared blaster (or IR blaster) is a device that emulates an infrared remote control to autonomously control a device that is normally controlled only by remote control key presses. The most common use of an IR blaster is to allow a recording device such as a DVR or VCR to change the channel on an external tuner such as a cable box or satellite receiver. This way, the recording device can automatically select the correct channel to record before starting the recording process. Another common use is to extend infrared signals in order to place remote controlled products behind closed doors.

I use a remote for att U-verse, a remote for TV when I want to use the input button, and a remote for the DVD player. You don't need The blaster really. Most people just store it with the mannual.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. The IR blaster is a wired sensor that plugs into the TV. One sensor is placed on TV while the other sensor is placed on your Cable box. You can then use the Sony remote to work the Cable box and TV, eliminating the need for the standard cable box remote. This is only helpful if your cable box is in close proximity to the TV. If it's a long distance away it won't be useful. For instance my cable box is in a closet 20ft from TV so I was not able to use it.
