When you start up the TV for the first time, it will ask you what devices are connected. I have a Verizon FiOS cable system attached, and after answering a couple of questions I can control the cable box with the Sony TV remote. I was also able to program the FiOS remote to control the volume and power on the TV, as well as the channels on the box. I am now able to use both remotes interchangeably.
