Hi, the Sel50f18 is a portrait lens. It is a sharp lens that is great for capturing reaction and portrait shots. This lens can blur the background easily. Best regards, Zander

Prime lenses are restrictive by nature (one focal length) but give you better results. The best way for you to know is take one for a test drive. Start with the kit lens in the store. See if they can let you try your lens in question. If you can't tell enough difference then this lens is not for you. There's no shame in that. The kit lenses may do everything you need. You have a wonderful camera.

Those two "kit lenses" that came with the camera are zoom lenses and are very useful but have significant limitations. Be very careful that you do not end up with the 50mm F1.8F, which is a full frame lens, and usually costs about $50 less! The 50mm F1.8 OSS which is an APSC lens will allow you to shoot with available light so that you will not need nearly as much light. Also, it is image stabilized so that you could hold it for difficult shots which would normally require a tripod.
