You can connect directly to the tv but you’d be using the TV tuner as your channels descrambler, so you’d only get the major network and basic cable channels. Otherwise, connect your cable box to the TV using your HDMI cable (making sure your cable box is connected to your input cable (from the wall, a router, or dish). If your TV is not receiving channels, then it’s either on the wrong input source or your cable box signal is not on, so check the source. I use Comcast so the signal comes from the router via a coaxial cable to the cable box, then to the TV via an HDMI cable. Mine set up as normal, taking about 5-10 min.
