“We have AT&T internet and for some reason its modem does not have an HDMI port, only an USB port, so will an USB cable be as "good" as an HDMI one? Are there any differences between the two? Would it be better to switch to a cable provider, like Xfinity?”

There are no HDMI connections on any modem as there is no need. They have LAN connections for a direct wire to TV's , soundbars, etc. There's also a connection to the router for WI-FI connections. Perhaps you're mistaking the HDMI port with the LAN connection.
