“just purchased the Sony 65x900F & Sony HTZ 9F soundbar. Which is a better connection, HDMI cable or optical cable. I've tried both and can't really tell any difference in sound. HDMI does give me a bit more control with tv remote over soundbar.”

HDMI is better. Not just because of the CEC (control) but because it allows for sound wider than 5.1 which is the limit of optical. You won't hear a difference in the sound but if you ever wanted more than 5.1 and the ability to use 1 remote, HDMI is what you'd need.

Both support multi-channel systems, but optical cables cannot carry all of the audio formats available on Blu-rays while HDMI can. Otherwise, they are both going to sound great, and you won't know the difference.
