The heat generated by the TV has to go somewhere; i.e., up, so I would absolutely recommend you allow the 12" clearance. Also make sure you mount it high enough above the top of your firebox/mantle so it doesn't get burned by the heat from the fire. Our neighbor mounted a TV only 6 inches above his, and some of the plastic started to melt.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.The top of my TV is not hot, but it also sits about 5 inches off the wall due to the mounting bracket. I feel one could get by with 4 to 6 inches so long as it has similar stand-off for ventilation.
