The receiver balances and phases speakers to the point you placed the microphone during set-up. The receiver does not control or 'know' of the TV speakers. If they are on, they will unbalance the sound and may produce an echo (sound in a can effect). Being able to have the TV speakers on simultaneously also depends on what is hooked up to the receiver. If your source of the audio/video has a PnP controller, it will flag the sound to a designated single device. This can be overridden with a HDMI splitter. Splitters are another box to plug in and may reduce video quality.
