This receiver replaced one that failed. This new one pumps out the bass to my 100 watt subwoofer. The bass vibrates half my house now. The power driving this unit is also excellent as I have a 6 speaker set up. The sound is very much cleaner and crisper with this Sony receiver. I would definitely recommend.

Sony always puts out the best products, this is why I'm a long time loyal fan. I'm enjoying my new Sony surround sound. And I love the fact that you can adjust each speaker independently...if the dialogue is too loud you can lower the volume of the center speaker...while leaving the other speaker volume up so u can enjoy quality sound when the action sequence plays. Overall... a great system for a decent price, on sale for $200.

    Modern Compliment to Classic Speakers

My boyfriend had these great Technics analog speakers but an old receiver that would not hook up to modern equipment. For his birthday, I bought this receiver, some 18 gauge speaker wire, and hooked it all up while he slept. (Not easy!!) The receiver brings the full-bodied sound of the speakers to life. I deducted one star, because the movie presets will only come through one speaker-- the others work through both. We watch movies with the music presets or one of personally equalized presets we've created. Other than that, we enjoy a full array of sound, and watching tv has become a whole new experience. Now we're looking for a larger tv!

I needed to replace a burnt-out receiver and did not need anything more than a 5.2 channel receiver. I owned a Sony brand receiver that lasted 15 years with proper ventilation and supplied power. Using a 1200 watt line conditioner and making sure that the receiver had proper ventilation was the key to the receivers' longevity.

    My Occasional Sony Replacement

Purchased two, one as immediate replacement for the same Sony product and the other as backup for that replacement. Why? Apparently the "Sony Sync" is extremely sensitive to lightning strikes. The killer signal apparently comes down the cable thru the tv to receiver and whacks the sync. After first of "sync deaths" of previous "sync deaths", I put power protection on all power lines and after another storm second bonk and sync was history again. Now I disconnect cable, if present at storm. The receivers still work fine just no sync any more. My system is all sony and I listen to my tv with my 3 way speakers (15" woofers) . Awesome sound. The left speaker is set up the same as right on top of storage cabinet.

Great AV receiver for the price

I have an excellent Yamaha receiver that has worked well for years. In our new media room we installed home theater seating, an Epson PowerLite 1080 projector and a pair of B&W tower speakers. My receiver was not AV/HDMI ready so I had to wiggle the connections manually, which was especially difficult with HDMI inputs where I had to split the audio to go to the receiver while the video was sent to the projector. So i got this Sony receiver, which was a snap to set up. It comes with a microphone that analyzes the acoustics of the room to configure it. In 10 minutes we were watching a movie. For the price, the sound is pretty amazing. It is really hard to justify spending more money on a receiver unless you have some very special needs. This receiver has enough HDMI inputs and outputs for me, subwoofer out, power is more than sufficient for 99% of people, and it looks well built. We have had it for about 6 weeks now and I am very happy with my purchase

Nice upgrade from Component to HDMI

I was replacing a 15+ year old sony receiver. Did not have a huge amount of money to spend, but was starting to really miss the stereo sounds after about 6 months of using the TV speakers. Black Friday sales helped to provide a great surprise for Christmas. It is capable of taking the banana plugs into all speaker channels which really helped the installation process, we used the 16G wiring. All of our current devices are HDMI and now go directly to the receiver, instead of doing a piggy back to the tv and then component cables to the old receiver. It is easy to use, with most explanations directly on the back of the product or box. Nice item to upgrade an old system into the 21st century. The sound dimensions are amazing and highly detailed. I would recommend a decent surge protector if you have an older home to accommodate the newer sensitive components.

I was doing a lot of research on receivers in this price range and this Sony 550 was the best option. Overall, it has sufficient watts per chanel, simple to use features, and easy to install. I have had mine for a little over a month and am using it for a smaller media room with a couple of Bose shelf speakers and a compact JBL center chanel with a 8" subwoofer, and it has excellent sound. If you are like me with little time in life to learn how to use complicated tech stuff but want a great sounding receiver with easy to use features, then I recommend getting the Sony 550.

    Great receiver, 4K support questionable

I recently went to Best Buy to setup a home theater system for myself. I purchased a complete Klipsch speaker setup, monster platinum speaker wire, and monster black HDMI cables. First of all, the sound quality on this is great! I have the 6.5" Klipsch reference speakers, and when playing flac files through my PC to the receiver, it sounds amazing. No issues with cranking up to higher volumes, and no distortion at higher volumes. Controller is very easy and simple to use (Although I use a Savant Remote for home automation). Now, I love this receiver, except for one thing. The receiver stated that it supports 4K pass through, which is technically true. However, this receiver does not support HDCP 2.2. Therefore, it cannot play some content (Eg. Roku 4 Ultra to receiver, only supports 1080p). It's easy to bypass HDCP by using something like a splitter/switch, but I don't think it should inherently be displayed on the box that it supports 4K. Overall, I give this receiver an 8/10 - it's cheap (Got it open box for $80 off), powerful, and great for playing music. If you want to pass through 4K content to it though, I would recommend checking out another receiver. Disclaimer: I am an employee of Best Buy - I did not receive this product at a discounted price, and my opinions are my own.

I had to replace my 7.1 Samsung Amplifier after a lighting strike took out all my HDMI ports. I went back and forth if I should save some money on a 5.1 or replace with another 7.1. Looked at different brands also. decided to save some money since I now live in a small apartment and did not think the 7.1 would be of much benefit. I could not be happier with the Sony 5.1 Amp. sounds great saved me over $100 off the 7.1 and other than that has all the same features. The HDMI selection works great and that was more important for me than the sound, but I was amazed as the sound is actually better than my older 7.1 Samsung. Setup was also very easy. plug in the mic hit the setup button all the speaker balance was set in minutes. I have not had to go back a make any changes. I did have to tweak the setting on my older uint. So, I have no complaints at all.

This receiver is fantastic. I bought it to pair up with my new Epson 2150 projector and all the add ons. System was easy to hookup and paired easily with all my other stuff. Looks great sounds great and great for someone who doesn't want to spend a mortgage payment on stereo equipment.

If you are looking for a good Home Theater Receiver that does not have all the bells & whistles of the higher price units. This is it. Easy to set up, great sound. The automatic set up is a great feature and has you up and running in no time. You can not go wrong with this sony

This unit puts out a lot of power, sounds nice, and has a clean look. It's a bit awkward to toggle through the options to get surround modes to work but overall, it's a nice unit - especially for the price!

This Sony is only the 2nd unit I have owned in the last 30 years, I only upgraded to this to get the advantage of HDMI switching for my home theater setup. Sound is excellent, surround spot-on, easy to setup, and Sony quality and consistency, at a great price. Very happy with this and since they never really change the look of their components it fits right in with my older components perfectly! Thanks Sony and Best Buy for carrying this at such a great price!

After upgrading to a oled 4k tv I needed an update on a receiver. I bought this one and a denon that cost a couple hundred more for basically the same features. This receiver wins hands down. The sound is very good for the price. I have monitor audio gold 60s on the front and Polk surround rears, Polk sub, and a Polk center. It powers them effectively enough for my use. THIS RECEIVER HAS ARC! So you only have to use one hdmi to the tv if you’re utilizing the smart functions on your tv but want surround sound. 10/10 I’d tell anyone to buy this if they don’t want to spend an arm and a leg on a quality receiver.

Ladies and gentleman, this Sony home audio receiver is truly one of the best that I've used yet. There are better models to be quite honest, but at the price point of $122 that i was blessed to purchase this for, I could not beat it. I would have like to have gotten the model 770 (that was just up from it) because it had the Bluetooth. But this, with the five HDMI and the 4K pass-through, have provided an ample amount of future-proofing for me and my household. I have a 4K television and different gaming consoles that stream in 4k, as well as some traditional older products that I use with my home theater setup... but this right here couldn't be beat- unless of course you can get the model that is right above it! But this is a great purchase for any and all audiophiles: sound is great and robust plus the functionality is great & it's pretty much a plug-and-play operation. The operating menu is a little bit old school but it serves its purpose. Be very cleasr, you may need to purchase a newer SUBWOOFER as this does not support passive/non powered subwoofers. Or if you love your current subwoofer, be ready to grab a $70-$90 Mono Subwoofer Amp online. Once i did that, my setup was great. Trust me qhen you watch a movie or a sporting event, your friends and family will be captured by the preset digital sound parameters. And when listening to music, get ready for your home concert!!! #ThanxBestBuy

For most people, this has everything you'll ever need. Setup is relatively easy, sound is good and it has plenty of inputs for the average living room. If you're in the market for a receiver, you could do a lot worse than this one. In this price range, though, you'll be hard-pressed to do better.

This receiver is really simple to use. For the price I think you get a decent amount of features. It has pretty much everything you need when it comes to 5.2 surround sound like basic Dolby Digital and DTS. It has four hdmi ports but also has some old style composite video connections which come in handy.
