“If I wanted to bring this camcorder to a college class room, would it be able to pick up the sound quality of the professor even if he isn't right in front of me? I really don't know which camera would be best for that.”

Hi Hill, the camera will pick up all the sound in front of the camera. If you want to focus on the voice of the professor, you might want to pick up a Handycam model with a zoom microphone, an example would be the HDRCX405. Thanks_Mitch
