“Why didn't it come with a battery and what rechargeable batteries can you use”

It comes with a battery. It is in the left housing of the headset. If it is empty you should return or ask for a replacement, it is included. Note- the base needs to be plugged into an outlet and then the headphones need to charge on the tower for about 4hrs to fully charge before using. It comes with a battery, you have to open the battery cover and move it because it come upside-down. I thought it doesn't have it, but it does.

Its supposed to come with a sony rechargeable battery. Sounds like its time for an exchange.

It did. There is a rechargeable battery in one ear pad. If your (included) charging stand is working and plugged in, the headphones charge automatically when you hang them on it. Battery can be replaced but expensive. Will last over a year. mine is about 16 months old now.
