• PlayStation has the PlayStation plus, which is like Xbox live. You can play without it, but it has nice perks. Also it's WAY cheaper than Xbox live. 3 months of PlayStation plus is just $25

• Yeah, the PSN is a required subscription. They have a lot of options to renew membership.
