Open box is not refurbished although some people might use it interchangeably. Refurbished means it went back to the manufacturer or authorized repair depot for reconditioning before putting it back for sale. An open box is just simply someone returned it back to the store after it has been opened, for whatever reason (defective units are sent back to the manufacturer - that is if the previous customer was honest and told the CSR that the unit was defective).
