Make sure the sound bar of receiver is indicating the source is Dolby and not 2 channel PCM. Also you will want adjust the volume to the rears to max for the best performance. The auto calibration tends to minimize their effectiveness IMO.

Allow us to help you and turn your experience around. Follow these steps to troubleshoot this issue: Note: The Rear speaker plays surround sound as part of the multi-channel sound or processed from the 2-channel sound. However, because of the characteristics of the rear speaker, the sound may be low depending on the playback source. 1. On the Soundbar remote control, press the REAR (rear speaker volume) + button to turn up the volume. Note: This button works only when the optional rear speaker is connected to the Soundbar. 2. If Night mode is set to ON, set it to OFF. Note: For details regarding Night mode, refer to the product manual. 3. Make sure the Sound Field Optimization is complete. You can start the optimization on Home → Setup → Advanced Settings → Speaker Settings → Sound Field Optimization, and follow the on-screen instructions. For details, refer to the Help Guide. Manuals are posted on your model support page. 4. Play the Test Tone or sample music • Use the Test Tone function. For details, refer to the Help Guide • Play the sample music following any of the steps: - Press and hold the input select button on the bar speaker for more than five seconds to start the playback. - Press and hold the MUSIC SERVICE button on the bar speaker for more than five seconds to start the playback. 5. Some speakers may not output sound depending on the SOUND FIELD and sound source settings combination. By pressing IMMERSIVE AE or SOUND FIELD to turn on the surround effect, the speaker system up-mixes audio signals, and sound is output from all speakers. • HT-A7000: On the remote control, press the IMMERSIVE AE button, and select Immersive Audio Enhancement: On. • HT-A5000/HT-A3000: On the remote control, press the SOUND FIELD button, and select Sound Field: Effect On or SF.ON. A separate article is available on our Sony Support website if there is no sound or the sound from the Rear speaker is too low.
