Can this pair with the older SRS XB-40? null

A friend of mine has one of those speakers, and we could not get it to pair up

Hi Christina, Thank you for your inquiry! Unfortunately, the devices that can only pair with the SRS-XB43 are SRSXB43, SRS-XB33, SRS-XB23 for party chain and another SRS-XB43 for Stereo Pair function. I hope this helps! -Carl
