• It should play any type of disk and upscale it to near 4k even without having a 4k tv.

• This player plays non 4K blu-ray discs. Also you can hook up and use this 4K player on a non 4K TV. I am hoping that you would be using a Sony branded HDTV with this Sony 4K player. I don't know how this Sony 4K player will act when connected to a non Sony branded HDTV.
