• Definitely smooth material. Not textured at all. I still love it tho and haven't had problems with it slipping out of my hand.

• It's a smooth case. I am a clutz and knock on wood I haven't dropped my phone yet or have it slip out of my hands. It seems like a pretty sturdy case and with my black iPhone 7 plus, it makes the cherry blossoms pop out in the back. I used to use an Otterbox so this is an adjustment, but so far a very pleasant one. I hope this helps you with your decision:)
