• There is no need to activate the phone. It can be used solely via Wi-Fi connections. I would install the SIM card, though, or you get a lot of annoying messages.

• Yes. You can use it as a standalone device without any sim card or prepaid cards. Install a VOIP app and you you can send and receive calls to others without paying, as long as you've got a wifi signal.

• No. The WiFi calling is a feature from T-Mobile which will also be counted towards your cell phone airtime minutes. The difference is, it uses WiFi instead of cellular signals.
