“i purchased this lense back in February, and had no issues. now, when i put it on my D3400, i constantly get an error message saying “lense not attached”, what’s happened here? is this lense not compatible with a D3400? Thx!”

Check the electrical contacts first. clean if any corrosion is evident. 2nd check bayonet mount groves for debris and third make sure your battery is fully charged. then check if vibration damper is in correct setting. haven't had a problem. But sticking to basics usually will narrow down the problem. That has been my method over the years. Good luck.
