“Could I connect this TV to a Yamaha v795 receiver from the 1990s just by connecting them through an optical audio cable? And if so, do I just turn off the TV speaker and make sure the receiver is turned on and set to the correct input?”

This TCL Roku TV is compatible with most soundbars and can be connected via HDMI ARC, Optical, or the 3.5mm headphone jack. You should be able to simply disable the TV speakers and use your receiver as you have described. Hope this helps! Thank you, TCL Customer Support
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.Yup! That's how my friends set up is. You won't get Atmos or DTS-X, but still have Dolby Digital and DTS pumped through the receiver (those formats are also embedded in the audio bitstream used for high-res/lossless codecs).
