There is a mode where two people can use one controller to play through the story mode but not two seprate controllers.

Unfortunately not. This is one of those "pass the controller" type games. You and your girlfriend will take control of a set of characters you choose in the beginning of the game.

Yes it features a local multiplayer mode that supports 2-4 (maybe 5?) players, each can use their own controller. At the start it will ask which characters you want to assign to which players. Whenever the game switches to another character's segment it will prompt that character's player to press a button to confirm they're ready.
