To be sure of the ground, the screw to which you attached the ground wire to must have an electrical "path" into the metal frame of the car. I don't know your make or model, but generally the area you describe would be mounted to a metal framework (the dashboard frame) which, in turn, mounts directly to some part of the car's chassis. If you want to be certain of a good ground (which will complete the circuit) you could always check with a multimeter to ensure that you have a properly grounded circuit.
