Internet connection is necessary in order for the Tivo to download local programming schedules into the Guide. The actual television signal comes through your antenna, not through the internet (unless you choose to purchase paid content). But as far as I know, there's not a way to record your shows unless you connect the Tivo to the internet... Tivo has to continually update the internal station Guide with local programming information and populates the Guide with several weeks' worth of programming. That's what enables the device to be programmed to record the shows.
