You can not use it without a TIVO subscription. I attempted to "test" it for OTA and such before subscribing. I could fumble through and get to the live TV, but only sorta. It knows when you have not subscribed and is not designed to work without a subscription.

Please try again later.No, but think about it; for $15/month ($12 additional units), you get a 4-recorder unit that has tons of space and a 2-week complete TV -Guide that you really need to make the TIVO work to a high level of customer control and enjoyment. Without this, you have virtually no control over what you want to record, what is coming up, and the ease of use of the integration between the TV-Guide and your recording desires. You are really paying for this: not just the ability to use the TIVO, but to use it to a high-level of functionality.
