You can do it however you'd like, you can go to the store and add your cash to a gift card and apply it on bestbuy.com and you will receive the code to your email.
I really love the "digital download" option since I do not have to go to the store (a city down) and I received it within 5 minutes and downloaded to my xbox profile and its tied to my account and not have to worry about losing the disc.
