Is the camera similar to a dash cam? null

The old Tom Tom is much better. This Tom Tom lacks an easy planning to your destination. It does not take the correct address, state, city with accuracy. The old Tom Tom had character where one could choose a vehicle with color to guide you. This Tom Tom simply has an arrow to guide you. Installing the program was much better with the old Tom Tom. One would simply connect it to the computer and that's all one needed to do to acquire the information on your device , it was much harder to install the program, the help was rude on the phone that was provided. I would not buy it for an older person to use.
