Sure I have downloaded the app on my iphone via wifi but to configure the AC1200 you need cell phone coverage during setup to configure the AC1200. That is the chicken and the egg. So what I did was keep my Cable modem to existing router, and its wifi connection, and ethernet connected that existing router to the AC1200. TP-link deco App on cell phone works via the wifi of the existing router and you can configure the AC1200. System works good throughout the house. Once configured however you can't remove the old existing router, hook the Cable modem to the AC1200 because that isn't the way it was setup via the TP-link Deco app. The system is a brick so you have to reset the 3 AC1200s and configure again using the TP-link Deco App on the iphone. But there is no wifi or cell phone coverage just as I started out.

As far as wi-fi calling it should work "via wi-fi" as long as your cell company supports it and the sim and phone (some do not) and alternative if it doesnt is to use a VOIP app there are many companies offering this service ether free with ads or pay (I recommend VOIP Cheap)
