No, it requires a neutral wire and will not work with "California style" wiring. The only switch I found that will work without a neutral is the Lutron Caseta Dimmer and It requires it's own proprietary hub. They cost a lot more than the TP-Link (probably a better product too). I only needed one since all my other switches have neutral. I ended up using Hue white bulbs and just bypassed the switch. I currently have four TP-Link dimmers and three of their switches.
