Because this model is an unusual length - high volume sales means low cost; low volume sales means high cost. If you need cheap, then buy a common 4 or 5 foot cable, as those are made in bulk. Buying a 1, 3, or 10 foot cable always costs 2 or even 5 times more. For example, the maker might sell a million 4 foot cables per year, but only 5000 3 foot cables a year.
