It's completely wireless. The box comes with two wires, though, that have some function. First is the charging cable. It can plug into the USB port on the Xbox One or any USB port. So you'll need to plug the headset in to charge. Second is a Media-to-headset cable. This is used to plug your phone (or anything with a small headset jack) into the headphones. It allows you to listen to music, movies, etc. from your phone while you are also receiving Xbox and party chat wirelessly. I use it occasionally when I'm playing a game and not chatting with friends... will plug my phone into it so that I can listen to podcasts or my music. Hope that helps.

The best buy guy thought maybe I had to have a cord connected to use both ingame sound and the mic but no, it just uses a wireless usb that plugs into the xbox one and you just have to pair it. You do have to use a cord if you use it for your mobile device, and of course it charges with a wired usb.
