Yes you have to turn on the battery pack for wireless charging ....... but it is so slow that my battery has actually decreased while on charge. I always use a cord

To put that in perspective me and my wife can charge both our phones from dead to full battery and still have 60% battery on the charger. Also you can charge 3 devices at the same time (1 wirelessly and 2 plug in via USBA) and to answer your 2nd question you just press the power button on the charger until the digital display (battery life) comes on then place the device on the charger and it automatically starts charging. Oh yeah a quick charge AC adapter works great to charge up the charger in around 1 hour give or take depending on your AC adapter specs (mine is 5v @ 1.6 amps). I hope this helps.
