“When I put my batteries into charge nothing comes on… I thought the red light was supposed to come on until it’s charged… Is that not correct? Secondly… What the AB switch for?”

It depends on whether or not your batteries are rechargeable. Try switching out with a dfferent battery. The switch switches between the type of battery you are trying to charge- nickel cadmium or nickel metal hidryde.
