“Why does it say "battery operated" when it isn't? My laptop only has one USB port - I can either have a plugged in cooling pad or my wireless mouse. Does anyone make a BATTERY OPERATED cooling pad?”

It definitely is not self powered by batteries but they may have meant that it does not need a wall outlet as it runs off the laptop battery. One option you could do is get a small power pack with USB ports (usually used for cell phone charging or similar devices) and this would free up your single USB slot and keep your laptop charged up longer.
