Yes, you can port your old phone number over. You will need to get information from your prior service carrier. 1. Your previous account number. 2. The port transfer number from your previous carrier. 3. Your zip code that was associated to your prior account. You can call your old service to get this information. If your phone has already been set up with a new phone number, I don't know if you can switch the number you currently have, to port your old number over, that would need to be asked by best buy (if that's where you purchased the visible from, or you could chat it on your new service, or you could possibly ask your old service). They might not be telling you the truth though, since you left their service.
