“How exactly does the 3rd channel work? Specs indicate that it supports DTS 3.0, so in that case it makes sense (3 discrete channels are played back, the 3rd one being a center/dialog). But DTS 3.0 is quite a rarity so far being available only on a handful of blu-rays. So what happens to the 3rd channel when you feed it more common formats? For instance something with fewer channels like 2.0 PCM? Or something with more channels like 5.1 DD/DTS?”

Thank you for inquiring about our product. When listening to a 2.0 signal, it would only play 2.0 audio. When listening to 5.1, that third channel for dialog would be played. Thanks again and have a great day.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.Blu-Rays have the Dolby-TRU HD and DTS Master Audio formats, however, you can only get those formats if you feed HDMI into a capable amp. Since this Vizio is only optical and coaxial input and cannot decode the 2 Blu-Ray formats, it will downmix the sound to 5.1 or regular DTS. If you feed it 2 Ch audio, it should simply feed all the channels with stereo sound.
