“Atmos cablabe sound bars normally have at least 2 up firing speakers for the elevated visual audio effect. This sound bar does not but is advertised as Atmos compatible. Could the manufacturer further explain this technology?”

It supports Dolby Atmos content, and it uses front-firing speakers on the bar to bounce sound off the ceiling and back down to the listener, creating the illusion of height. That's from a review I read. But to be honest, all speakers do that to some degree or another. The system is listed/described as being 5.1, not 5.1.2, so I would think the stated Dolby Atmos capability is mostly an advertising ploy. Maybe it can decode a Dolby Atmos signal with discrete channels, but the soundbar itself is not capable of doing true Dolby Atmos for the very reason you stated. Personally, I'm skeptical as to whether any soundbar can do Dolby Atmos, regardless of the driver orientation, upward-firing speakers are just a cheap gimmick to advertise the product as being Dolby Atmos capable so they can charge more money. That being said, the review I referenced above calls this the best soundbar under $500, doing very well with TV/diaglogue, music, and movies.
