Technically, no, you do not need to upgrade as long as you don't mind using a direct connection to the tv from your 4K device and then using your tv's audio out to your receiver. If you use your receiver as an HDMI pass-through, it will not work with the new 4K Ultra HD players on the market. I've tried it to be certain. You will have to upgrade to a 4K pass-through if you do not want to have a direct connection to the tv from the 4K player. Also, netflix and hulu do not stream in 4K using the built in apps on 4K tv's. You need a separate device with streaming capabilities. I'm using the new Samsung Ultra HD player, but I'm sure there have to be a couple cheaper options out there. Hope this helped.
