“What is the material of the back of the center shelves? Could that backing be left out when assembled, or can it be cut out to accomodate my center sound system that is deeper than the shelves?”

Hi Emo, The back panels of this item are made of High-Grade MDF. They are thinner pieces than the rest, and the middle portion you're talking about is screwed into place towards the end of set up. We wouldn't recommend cutting into it, but it could easily be left off during assembly. Please let us know if you have any other questions!
