I suggest taking it into a store and seeing the geek squad they might be able to do a clone of the old drive and install the OS as well as the new hard drive in to the laptop.

They found out it would work and it does, except that we also found out my laptop needed more memory. So a Geek Tech helped me increase the memory for $12 and now my old Inspiron is as good as new. Thank you Geek Squad.
