• Cable is about 3 foot. Can be operated on its side. But, not recommended due heat vents are located top and bottom.

• The USB cable is about 4' long (I only needed a few inches and kept the excess folded in the original wrapper for neatness). As for laying it on its side, I've seen pictures of it being used like that and generally speaking, most hard drives don't care if they're flat or on edge since they have relatively small mass. But double check the WD site to see if there is any restriction on orientation.

• Data Cable is about 3 ft long. Don't know for sure about laying it on its side, but the rubber feet are only on the bottom of the unit.
