Yes if you connect your WD Cloud with hard wire, it will sure works faster and plus you don't have to be in the same network to access the files. You can be out anywhere and you can still access your files. It is a great product. I really don't have answers to your previous questions. Sorry.

The WD backup drive needs to use a hard wire Ethernet cable plugged into your wireless router. A cable is even provided by Western Digital for that purpose. Afterwords, you can access the drive from any wireless attached device, laptop, desktop, etc.

Once plugged in and network access is obtained, you can set up an account at weatern digital my cloud in order to remotely access your media or simply use it a DLNA home media server to access your media, pictures, etc throughout the house.
