You can be out anywhere and you can still access your files. It is a great product. I really don't have answers to your previous questions. Sorry.

A cable is even provided by Western Digital for that purpose. Afterwords, you can access the drive from any wireless attached device, laptop, desktop, etc.

Once plugged in and network access is obtained, you can set up an account at weatern digital my cloud in order to remotely access your media or simply use it a DLNA home media server to access your media, pictures, etc throughout the house.
