Don't allow it Internet access and restrict backups and access only to the local network. These are all options during set up. I o Lynda use mine to connect local, no internet access.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. If you think your information has been compromised, just take your device off-line. It is quite secure as long as your not giving your IP address and PW out to anyone. More secure than Apple iCloud, which has been hacked into. Dropbox is also another easy to hack software. Your device will use the internet to update and upload and view. If you unplug the ethernet cable you will not be able to do any of that. So worst comes to worst unplug. You cant just "unplug" dropbox or iCloud, you would have to take all of your information, pics, and or documents off of the iCloud or dropbox, but here you unplug and change IP address and PW. Good Luck!
I would recommend:
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.A. Use a Loooooooong Password. B. If you're using a Mac you can create an encrypted disk image or if you're using Windows you can use Bitlocker but i believe Bitlocker may only be available on Enterprise versions of Windows.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. The WD Cloud uses OpenVPN for it's authentication services, and it's registered to WD only for it's DNS entry (address to find IP address). WD doesn't interrupt or obtain any information on your password. So as long as you have a strong password, you'll be fine. You're in the same boat as enterprise companies with their storage authentication (to a degree). You'll be as safe as anyone else who has their own cloud NAS device at home.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.Technically, I think the "cloud" access (i.e., WD web interface) may actually be pretty solid -- but I have not actually given that a detailed review. The EASY hack for this drive would be the FTP port 21. The FTP access for this drive sends the password UNENCRYPTED (IN THE CLEAR). If you block port 21, you could maybe build an SSH tunnel using PuTTY, ... but things like SFTP-Drive do not seem to work directly with this drive, because it uses a NON-STANDARD format for passing the parameters ... so I have not yet figured out how to make SFTP-Drive work with this drive. So on one level, I think one could indeed directly compromise the drive (the cloud stuff ... would seem like a harder exploit). HOWEVER, if you are using at home -- will someone waste the time trying to hack your one drive (high effort -- low reward). BUT if you are using this for a small office, I would not do it. Buy a real NAS Server -- and put it behind a REAL firewall -- and VPN in to your data -- so that you have some real protection. <
> Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. If someone has access to your cloud, it's because they ALREADY have access via your network. There are also various privacy settings so one share can have a password and another can be open. You can have settings whether or not people can delete content off the share or just view. Test it with unimportant duplicates of course. This is a personal cloud, which means that it is your network cloud unlike a cloud service off the internet. You have complete control!
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.I found this link, though it seems outdated since updated firmware has been released and you are prompted to update firmware on accessing the device. Nevertheless, Here is the article from September 2015: https://www.latesthackingnews.com/hackers-can-access-your-western-digital-my-cloud-device/
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. The cloud has administrative settings to alert if there's any activity on the network in general. Also, aside from have a login with password you can choose to keep certain folders and files private and encrypted. Other than that, it doesn't display on wifi or anything so people around you shouldn't even know you have a cloud unless they have access to the network you are on and then view the network map.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.Your router and modem can be set to make that unlikely if not impossible
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. The drive creates its own network so anything attached to that network is open but everything in your home network is completely separate.
