No monthly fee because you own the drive wherever you decide to install it. The path from your device to this hard drive is via the internet. In other words, even if you have your laptop on the same network, any data you save is routed through the internet instead of a physical or wifi connection from your computer to your router to you My Cloud. There is a way to make My Cloud an external drive but WD does not go out of their way to explain how this can be done. I think some default Win 10 security settings prevents easily setting this up so I had to go to YouTube to figure out how to set up. I changed some Win 10 settings and now I My Cloud set up as Z drive. Just to repeat, it can be treated as external hard drive but it must be connected to the internet and any data saved to it will be transferred via the internet connection from your computer or phone to the My Cloud. By the way, multiple uses can be configured on the same hard drive so each can have their own portion of the drive without the other person seeing the other persons files.

You will be able to access the files locally and remotely using your user credentials from your laptop and mobile phone. The WD My Cloud Home is a storage device and you don't need to pay monthly fees for storing your data. Need Help? Please see our "'Contact Us" page for information
