No, the only ways to "back up" this device are to use one of the online cloud services that this device supports and use the auto file sync feature, or to use your computer as a means to copy data from the device to another device that is connected to your computer either directly or through a network connection. The USB port is meant to be a way to add files to the WD MyCloud, but in my experience it is very finicky and will only recognize a select small number of external USB storage devices. My older WD external drive was not recognized and several of my USB flash drives were also not recognized. You cannot add or access data by directly connecting a computer to the USB device.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. The latest update to the firmware allows you to attach a USB drive to this drive and either download to the My Cloud Home or upload to the attached drive. Downloading to the My Cloud Home is unbelievably fast, when uploading to a drive it takes a while but set it and forget it for awhile like over night.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. You can hook the USB drive up to your computer and then connect to the MyCloud and mount it as a volume. If you’re using a Windows machine you can assign the mounted volume a drive letter. From there you can use your computer backup software to back up one drive to the other. You won’t be able to connect a USB drive to the MyCloud directly because it only has an Ethernet port. Hope that helps.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. There is software included on the drive itself that you can use. As an alternative, Windows also has software.
