Hi Anna, I actually haven't owned it very long but so far I am very impressed. I am not sure about privacy settings because I bought it for an office so everyone could have access to common files and I just keep my private files on my own computer but I am sure there is a way to separate those files out so only you can see them. I am just not sure how to do that. Sorry I wasn't much help but the system itself is incredible and has saved me from carrying down and subsequently breaking every single ext hard drive I hooked to my computer. Thanks! -Joseph
