• It's actually a journal file system like Linux and other small NAS/SAN products. You can format it to NTFS if you want to, but why slow the disks down just to direct connect it to a windows machine? Use SAMBA/NFS as it is designed to be a network storage product.

• they are NTFS. These drives work pretty well and are a great convenience!
