• Being that you don't need to install it internally and it does show up as a drive letter in Windows, it's really an external drive anyway as it sticks out from the USB port.

• This IS an external hard drive. It is in a USB 3.0 enclosure, ready to be plugged into your computer's USB port (or hub, if you use one).

• Sure, just as long as you put it in a standard 3.45" external enclosure or add a usb->sata cable.
