The way to power your external hard drive is to purchase a USB hub that has an external power supply. Plug the hard drive into the powered hub and the device you want to back-up. A hub with the USB 3 will transfer the fastest but most external hard drives are backward compatible. The powered hub isn't required in the vast majority of cases.
