Upper vent is roof rent. Make sure the microwave flap/damper opens up when fan is running. And, if you have a vent system that goes outside, either up or up and then sideways, that the microwave discharges into the base of the vent. I had to move mine about two invhes toward the front of my cabinet.

Please try again later.Update: I finally got answer from Whirlpool stating that for Roof vent, use the same vent cover install as wall vent..ie, the Page 5 manual should read: Vent cover installation (for Upper vent, Roof vent and Wall vent installation). It is frustrated that this microwave has been out for 1 yr and they are still not clarifying this confusion and continue to deliver the wrong manual. Poor communications. I urge everyone check and make sure the vent cover is installed correctly your own (an easy check!).
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.The microwave can vent into living area or into a duct going through roof to outside. You have to block one of the two so that the air is forced into the other. So block the vent on top of microwave closest to front or door and that forces air into the back duct that would be connected to outside or do the reverse if you do not have outside ducting. There are cover plates included to block the correct the vent.
